What you can send

Campaigns customers reply to

WhatsApp messages carry images, buttons and links, and customers can answer in the same chat. That turns a broadcast into a conversation and a conversation into a sale.

Example: a marketing template with buttons and a one-tap opt-out.
Example: a utility template that cuts failed cash-on-delivery orders.
Example: an AI agent answering a Sinhala enquiry at midnight.

Start with the messages customers already expect, then add offers once they trust the channel.

Banking, leasing and finance

Payment reminders, application status, one-time passcodes and service requests handled in one verified chat.

Education

Admission enquiries answered at night, class reminders, exam results and fee reminders for parents.

Official API or a bulk WhatsApp sender?

Many "bulk WhatsApp" tools sold in Sri Lanka run on personal accounts or WhatsApp Web. They are cheap until the number is banned and every customer chat on it is lost.

Official WhatsApp Business API
  • Approved by Meta, with a verified business profile
  • Templates with buttons, images and one-tap opt-out
  • Shared inbox, AI agent and delivery reports
  • Clear per-message pricing from Meta
Unofficial bulk senders
  • Break WhatsApp's terms of service
  • High risk of your number being banned
  • No reliable delivery or read reports
  • Contact lists handled outside your control

FAQ

WhatsApp marketing questions

What Sri Lankan businesses ask before their first campaign.

Is bulk WhatsApp marketing allowed in Sri Lanka?

Yes, through the official WhatsApp Business API. You send Meta-approved marketing templates to customers who have opted in, and every message carries an easy way to stop promotions. Unofficial bulk-sender software breaks WhatsApp's terms, and numbers that use it are often banned. Read official vs unofficial WhatsApp senders.

How much does WhatsApp marketing cost in Sri Lanka?

You pay a Bloomwire plan from LKR 8,500 a month plus Meta's fee for each delivered template. Meta's indicative Sri Lanka rates are about US$0.073 (around LKR 24) per marketing message and US$0.0020 (around LKR 0.66) per utility or authentication message. The first 1,000 service replies per number each month are free. See WhatsApp pricing.

Do I need my customers' consent?

Yes. WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy requires opt-in before you send business messages, and Sri Lanka's Personal Data Protection Act applies to how you collect and use contact data from 1 January 2027. Collect consent on your website, at checkout or in store, and keep a record of it. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

Can I send WhatsApp messages in Sinhala and Tamil?

Yes. Templates, buttons and replies can be in Sinhala, Tamil, English or Singlish. Unlike SMS, a WhatsApp message is not split into parts or charged more for Unicode text. A template body can hold up to 1,024 characters.

What is the difference between the WhatsApp Business app and the API for marketing?

The free app is built for one phone and manual broadcasts to contacts who saved your number. The API lets a whole team work one number, send approved templates to all opted-in customers, run an AI agent and track delivery and replies.

Is WhatsApp better than SMS for marketing?

They do different jobs. SMS reaches every phone and costs from LKR 0.70 per promotional message, so it suits short offers to large lists. WhatsApp costs more per marketing message but carries images, buttons and two-way chat that can close a sale. Many Sri Lankan brands use both. See WhatsApp vs SMS vs email.
