WhatsApp Business API pricing in Sri Lanka from 1 October 2026: what changed

BBloomwire team24 October 20264 min read

Short answer: since 1 October 2026 Meta bills WhatsApp Business Platform messages per delivered message, Sri Lanka has its own market rate card instead of the old "Rest of Asia Pacific" group, utility and authentication messages to Sri Lanka cost about US$0.002 each, and service replies are billable again after 1,000 free per business phone number each month.

Updated 25 October 2026. Rates are taken from Meta's published rate card as reported by industry sources; always confirm in Meta's current rate card before you budget. Our live calculator is on the WhatsApp Business API pricing page.

Table of WhatsApp Business API message rates for Sri Lanka from 1 October 2026

What changed on 1 October 2026

  • Service messages are charged again. Each business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages a month (no rollover). Messages beyond that are billed.
  • Utility messages sent inside an open customer service window are charged. They had been free since 1 July 2025.
  • A payment method is required. Without one on file, service messages stop once the free tier is used.
  • Sri Lanka now has market-specific rates rather than sitting inside "Rest of Asia Pacific".
  • Authentication-international messages (OTPs sent to numbers in a different country from the business) have their own rate.

Authentication0.002 (down from 0.0113)

Volume discounts apply only to utility and authentication at high monthly volumes. Your provider's platform fee and any taxes are on top of Meta's charges.

The four message types, in plain English

  • Marketing: promotions, offers, product announcements and re-engagement. The most expensive type.
  • Utility: order confirmations, delivery updates, appointment reminders, payment receipts.
  • Authentication: one-time passcodes and login verification.
  • Service: free-form replies to a customer who messaged you first, inside the 24-hour customer service window.

Worked examples in rupees

At an illustrative rate of LKR 331.28 per US dollar (your actual bank rate will differ):

  • 10,000 marketing messages = about US$732, or roughly LKR 242,500.
  • 20,000 order and delivery updates (utility) = about US$40, or roughly LKR 13,250.
  • 5,000 OTPs (authentication) = about US$10, or roughly LKR 3,300.
  • Customer support: the first 1,000 service messages per number each month are free; beyond that each costs about US$0.002.

How to keep your WhatsApp bill low

  1. Send utility, not marketing, wherever the message is genuinely transactional. At these rates utility is about 97% cheaper than marketing, but Meta reviews template categories, so do not mislabel promotions.
  2. Use Click-to-WhatsApp ads. A customer who messages you from such an ad opens a free entry point window, so your replies in that window do not incur message fees.
  3. Let customers message you first. Support conversations are the cheapest traffic you can have.
  4. Clean your list. Messages are billed when delivered, so removing inactive or invalid numbers improves cost per real conversation.
  5. Add a payment method before you run out of free service messages.

What this means for Sri Lankan businesses

The change favours transactional and support use cases: order updates, appointment reminders, OTPs and customer care are now very cheap to run on WhatsApp. Marketing remains the premium category, so campaigns should target opted-in, high-intent audiences. Frequently asked questions

How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost in Sri Lanka?

Meta charges per delivered message: about US$0.0732 for marketing and US$0.002 for utility, authentication and (after the free tier) service messages. A provider platform fee is added on top.

Is WhatsApp Business API free in Sri Lanka?

No, but service replies are free up to 1,000 per business phone number each month, and replies inside a Click-to-WhatsApp ad free entry point window are free. Sending marketing templates is always charged.

Did WhatsApp prices change in October 2026?

Yes. From 1 October 2026 service messages became billable after the free tier, utility messages inside the service window are charged, and Sri Lanka received its own market rates.

Do I need a credit card to use the WhatsApp Business API?

You need a valid payment method on your WhatsApp Business Account, otherwise service messages stop after the free tier. Your provider can explain whether Meta bills you directly or through them.

Can I pay in Sri Lankan rupees?

Meta publishes rate cards in a limited set of currencies (for example USD), so charges are generally calculated in USD and converted. Ask your provider how they invoice.
